HISTORY

Founded in 2020  kbl Architects is a continuation of Kouzmanoff Bainton Architects which itself was a continuation of Alexander Kouzmanoff, FAIA, Associates. The original firm was founded in 1967. Robert Livesey joined the firm in 2020 after having taught and administered a school of architecture and led his eponymous firm for 37 years. With over 100 years of combined architectural experience the firm has participated in a broad range of project types from housing to laboratories, from performance spaces to athletic facilities, from classrooms to offices, from recording studios to libraries.

PARTNERS

Jan Kouzmanoff

Jan Kouzmanoff works diligently to enhance the interests of his clients and offers an unparalleled capacity for abstract thinking, problem-solving, and creative design. These abilities are applied in the context of profound technical expertise. He has extensive experience in programming, concept planning, sustainable design, zoning and code analysis, materials research, and project scheduling. He has worked on a broad range of project types, and his contribution is integral to every project the firm undertakes.

He holds a B.A. from Columbia College and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University.

Kenneth Bainton

Kenneth Bainton thrives on helping clients care for their existing buildings and brings a keen understanding of how a building’s architecture, structure, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems need to work as an integrated whole. In addition, he offers a hands-on and direct approach to overseeing the design development, consultant coordination, and budget management of individual projects. His attention to detail and comprehensive knowledge of building systems and construction make him an invaluable asset on any project, but particularly on renovation and repositioning projects.

He holds a B.A. from Columbia College and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University.

Robert Livesey

Robert Livesey is a strong believer in the power of architecture to inspire people and transform places. As an educator, he both taught and administered at the Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University for 30+ years. As the Director of the School, he was the lead “client” for the design and construction of Knowlton Hall, and therefore knows the intricacies of a project and the issues of coordinating multiple constituent groups from the client’s side. In addition to other recognitions, he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the American Academy of Rome.

He holds an A.B. in Architecture from Princeton University and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University.
