The Sound Collective
The Collective is a professional music school specializing in percussive instruments and voice education. The project, a renovation of the existing ground and basement level space of the historic Standard Oil Building at 26 Broadway in lower Manhattan, houses the school's new facilities. This new facility includes a performance space, sound recording and control rooms, practice rooms, studios, classrooms, a digital library, faculty and student lounges, and various administrative and operational rooms.
Given the limitations of working within a landmark building and the acute acoustical requirements a musical school needs, special attention was paid to how the structure of the building could be used within the design. Additionally, new mechanical, electrical, and fire protection services were fully integrated into the three layers of sound isolation constructed within the existing building shell, ensuring the sound does not leave the performance space
